Currently I am working a job that has me awake from 11pm to 7am five days a week. My first night was last night, err, this morning and I just woke up. The thing is there was a point between 4 and 6 where I was finding it very hard to keep awake. I had to do push ups and walk around just to keep from falling asleep. I also turned all the air vents on high cold. I also has my Subway to munch on. But man, it was tough for me to stay awake. I suppose it was my first night and I just need to get adjusted to a new sleep schedule, but I was wondering if there was any other advice you can give me for staying awake while working behind a desk.

Man, I know what u r saying. There is always a couple of hours before you leave that just is annoying. I haven't really worked at night but I usually drink coffee or some type or drink that keeps me awake when I need to do something, I don't know if that would be an issue where you work. Sometimes doing push-ups and all that will get u tired and more sleepy, although that is not my case.

Well considering you where doing push ups, the job doesnt keep you continuously busy, thats good, lol. What do you do? Well, my duties are quite few. I'm working at the front desk of a Residence Hall, and during normal hours I would be quite busy, but considering it is night, I have absolutely nothing to do. There are times when I will go 3-4 hours without seeing anyone or getting a phone call. You see, during the summer at my University, there aren't many students living in the Residence Halls, so the University rents out the student rooms to people who come to the University for Conferences. So, just like a nice hotel, the front desk stays open 24 hours a day, and I am the one at the desk at night. jandrox: Well, I do have a coffee maker in my room, but I was going to try to not rely on caffiene or other mega-energy drinks. Instead I was planning to rely on a more organic approach. Things like fruit drinks, fruit and other food stolen from the cafeteria, and maybe some ramen or something. For the most part I think I need to get into some sort of rhythm for sleeping, and I am planning to set up my curtains with a heavy blanket hanging over them to shut out the light when I am sleeping during the day. Any other genious ideas?

Your body will adjust after a week or so and it won't be nearly as bad.
But to stay awake...different things work for different people really. You should eat some fruits, drink plenty of water (not only is it good for your body but getting up for bathroom breaks will wake you up), if you are feeling really tired pushups can help get the blood flowing a little but then you should also get up and walk around so as to not exert too much energy and thus just wear yourself out. Having someone to talk to can help or just working on a project. Reading can help sometimes too...unless you are one of those people that get tired when you read. If you play any instruments bring it along and practice for a while since you wouldn't be disturbing anyone.

Oh yeah, I know that talking with people really helps. Normally I am a night manager at a different hall, and if there is someone else to talk to it helps to pass the time, A LOT. Its too bad that there isn't anybody to talk to at this job, except myself when I go crazy.
Another good thing that I am taking advantage of now is the huge collection of DVDs they have at the desk. That really helps with the 4-6am stretch. hehe.

They have this dumb rule where we can't play any "involved" games. And I do get very "involved" when I play Rakion. Besides, I don't have a USB mouse for my laptop.

Well you can be like me and play with the touchpad! When I am awake.. I listen to my iPod.. it keeps me busy for a while too! If you happen to have a 60GB Video iPod, you can store videos on it and watch those to take up the time.. *cough* porn *cough*
