Is it a 56k modem or an ADSL modem? Since, its shared between two comps it's likely a form of broadband; if it isn't then it shouldn't be shared >.> To check RAM look for System. If you have windows XP and don't use classic view then START -> Control Panel -> Performance and Maintenance -> System should give you a window called System properties. Near the bottom it should say your RAM.

512 is kinda little. It wouldn't cost much to buy another 512 MB card (btw it's cheaper to buy a single card rather than several lower-rated ones)

Well, it's pretty easy to install a memory card (which provides RAM). After you buy the RAM you see the stick. You then open up your computer (assuming you aren't using a Laptop) and just unscrew one of the side panels. If you see metal rather than computer chips then put that side back on and unscrew the other side panel. Just looking at the shape of the memory card should explain where it goes. There should be another one that looks like it already there. It should be pretty easy to snap in. If it requires effort to get it it fit then either get a more computer-savy friend or return the memory card, although I think you would see significant improvement in performance.
